The DRC is committed to providing reasonable academic accommodations for students with disabilities – receiving and reviewing each request on a case-by-case basis. Requests for academic accommodations should be supported by documentation, as documentation assists the DRC in establishing eligibility for services and in decision-making regarding accommodations.
Types of documentation can include:
- psycho-educational evaluations
- neuro-psychological evaluations
- diagnostic summary letters from an appropriate medical professional (e.g. medical specialist, psychiatrist, audiologist)
- medical records
- Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), 504 Plans, or similar secondary school-based documents.
NOTE: School-based documents such as an IEP, a 504 Plan, a Transition Plan, or a Summary of Performance without diagnostic information may not by itself provide sufficient information to determine eligibility for services.
The currency of the documentation required will depend on the nature of the disability and the type of documentation provided. Documentation for a long-standing and unchanging disability may not need to be as current as documentation for a disability of a more fluid or changing nature. The DRC will review documentation on a case-by-case basis. The DRC may work with students in providing accommodations on a temporary, time-limited basis while additional or updated documentation is being obtained. Additional or updated documentation may be required if the documentation does not:
- Contain diagnostic information
- Provide a sense of impact on the student in an academic setting
- Support the requested accommodation(s)
It is important to understand that other post-secondary institutions, ed testing agencies (e.g. ETS, LSAC, AAMC) and licensure boards (e.g. NCEES, NCLEX) have their own documentation guidelines. Receiving accommodations at the University of Florida does not guarantee receipt of accommodations in other settings.
