If you did not successfully complete two years of high school foreign language due to a disability, you should contact our office directly at 352-392-8565 for further information regarding the petition process for a substitution. American Sign Language (ASL) is accepted as a foreign language. Petitions will require appropriate documentation of a disability that impacts learning a foreign language.

All UF applicants must have completed an equivalent of 8 to 10 credits of foreign language in high school or community college or by examination. American Sign Language (ASL) is accepted by UF as a foreign language. A cultural option alternative was developed for students with disabilities that directly impact their ability to complete this requirement. An applicant that did not complete this requirement due to a documented disability may petition for the Foreign Language Substitution (FLS) as part of the admissions process. Appropriate documentation must be presented and provide a rationale that the student’s failure to meet the requirement is relative to the disability.

These FLS courses should be completed prior to starting at UF. Approval of the FLS does not guarantee that the applicant will be admitted to the University of Florida. If admitted, a student that successfully completed FLS courses for admission may then be required to complete additional coursework while attending UF if his/her college has a foreign language requirement. Substitution courses must be taken for a grade…taking them pass/fail is not acceptable.

If approved for the foreign language substitution, the applicant should take 8 to 10 credits of 2000 level or higher courses with a non-English/American cultural component. The courses should have significant non-Anglo cultural comparisons or a world view component. (Classes that focus primarily upon diversity within the United States are not acceptable for the cultural substitution.) The following is a list of courses that meet the UF foreign language admissions requirement and are offered at most Florida community colleges: ANT2410, EUH2000, EUH2001, EUH2033, GEO2420, HUM2210, HUM2230, HUM2410, HUM2420, HUM2472, ISS2270, LAH2020, LIT2110, LIT2120, LIT2195, LIT2350, WOH2040, REL2210, REL2240, and REL2300. Courses other than those listed above may be accepted but require prior approval.
